A fun to drive, comfortable, very safe car. I'm also in NJ -- and my college aged daughter commutes to MSU.
Most important is frequent oil changes, to prevent sludge and engine failure. if your car has not had the 60k service done, absolutely get it done. And, absolutely be sure you have multiple keys. If you lose all, the cost is well over $1000 for a new computer and keys.
9-5s do have their share of foibles
* DIC -- ignition cassette -- should be updated, along with the software
*PCV valve update -- a MUST do update, related to sludge -- absolutely have this done soon, if it has not been done
* SID -- information display, rarely lasts longer than ~2-3 years, several vendors offer rebuilds
* Coolant bypass valve -- yours is about due, if it hasn't already been replaced.
* Motor/transmission mounts -- yours is likely due for these soon
* Climate control -- dreaded "code 8" which costs close to $2000 to fix at dealer, but there are work arounds well noted on this site
* Fuel pump -- yours is about due, too -- quite expensive at the dealer, better to be proactive
* Window tracks -- common problem, tracks/rollers break or get loose, fix before the window actually falls in the door --- then it gets expensive
* ABS failure -- ridiculous price to fix at dealer, couple hundred following what users on this site have posted (have it rebuilt)
* brakes - front brakes, using Saab OEM pads have never lasted me more than 15k miles -- so have those checked, too
* crankcase position sensor (CPS) -- frequent problem related to no start. Inexpensive to replace, but when it fails you will be stranded and need a tow.
In addition to any service the car is due for, definitely replace the DIC and update the software, do the PCV vent update (if none of this has been done). Your car has low miles, so this is important.
If you further want to be proactive, replace the CPS. Does your daughter go to school in NJ? If close enough, you could wait on the coolant bypass valve and the fuel pump, otherwise, these are worthwhile proactive replacements (especially the fuel pump, which is mucho $$ at the dealer, since the car will also need to be towed when it fails).
Its a great car for a younger driver -- since its so safe. Though its also fast -- so you need to warn her about that.
