Rattling feedback in steering wheel

My '99 9-5 has suffered greatly this winter due to the unconscionable mismanagement of road repairs by the municipal government. I can't say for certain, but it seems that this may be in part to blame for my latest tale of woe.
Over the last couple of weeks, a nasty shake or rattle has begun to communicate through the steering wheel. The car tracks true and doesn't exhibit the sensation so much when it is at dead-center, but as soon as you start to turn (especially left), the wheel starts to shake in your hands and it begins to tug in that direction, pulling you harder into the turn. It isn't anything that would overwhelm the driver, but it is odd and I have to compensate by bringing the wheel back towards center.
The most unusual sensation is when I have the wheel nearly locked to one side or the other and I'm moving slowly, such as when parking, the front wheel(s) seems to "hop." There's an odd feeling that the wheel has scooted laterally a hair and a little shudder goes up through the car.
The possible causes have been running through my head. Bent wheel, bad tires (a possibility... they're at the point that I certainly will replace them shortly), shot wheel bearing.
At any rate, I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience, and if they found a solution?
Of course I'll be taking her in to the shop, but it's nice to have some ideas ahead of time to plan for the inevitable expense.
