There are several ways to go. Each depends on how mcuh you want to get into it.
1) drain teh oil an use a bent hanger to "scrape" over where the sump is and see if you get any evidence of sludge.
2) Pull the Cam cover and look to see if ther eis any eviednec of sludgeing ( Some poeple say the sludging goes down mut lots of mechanics se this and sy if there is sludging you will see it when you pull the cover.
3) Drop the sump and clean the Pickup screeen This is the definative fix. not imppossible for a DIY or terribly expensive ( $200-300?) but you gotta moce the subframe out of the way to get it out. ALso there has been lots of postings about blocked pickup screens in non-slucged motros that can cause a problem. You need to clean out the screen
ALosmake usre you do teh PVC update #6, it is supposed to help reduce the threat of sludge.
