I think the blow point of cap is up around 15-18Psi which is where the manufacturer wants it due to a lower boiling point.
When reading the coolant temperature using the scan tool on a hot day with a hot engine is very close to and over the boiling point many times.
The 4 cyl engine runs hotter than the V6.
Ever since car makers started to use computer run gauges they also built in a high and low point on the temp gauge so that the needle stays in the middle over a wider range of temperature.
This is to cut down on the visits of people being nervous of when the needle is a tad below center or a tad above center.
It have also had the bad effect that people are now over heating their engines since the car will not show any slow warning signs month or weeks before something fails, in terms of a higher than normal reading.
So now, many are caught by surprise when suddenly the next high parameter has been reached and the needle suddenly swings to high.
It is possible though to move the high/low band closer together to get a more lively temp gauge. This is done with the Tech 2 scanner.
