I don't use the gauge tool since the tensioner itself is a gauge.
When you have set up the belt properly and the cam shaft and crank shafts are all timed properly using the two eccentric idler pulleys, the tensioner have two lines that should be lined up when proper tension is set.
As mentioned, the learning curve is extremely high on this engine and many "seasoned" techs have gotten it wrong.
Many believes that the two idler pulleys are used to set tension too, but that is wrong. They are only used to time 1-2 to 3-4 cam shafts (middle pulley) to each other and the 1-2-3-4 cams to crank shaft (lower idler).
It is lots and lots of information on this topic on the NG900/OG9-3 board too since it has been talked about to great length.
It's just a matter of spending some hours reading through and picking out the good info.
