Can you help diagnose?
My 7 yr old battery went dead. I noticed the positive terminal was a little loose. Still, would not seem to charge once tightened. Prior to that I had some intermittent AM radio interference for a month. Also the drivers side headlight, apparently under low voltage, would not get the Xenon to ionize, while the passenger, a newer bulb, would light. drivers would flicker and give up.
I put in an Exide battery to spec, 700cca 840ca series 91, looked like the exact match for the SAAB original, same manf obviously.
4 days later, today, I am having trouble, turns over slow, electrics seems weak. I went to a diff (nearby) store and they said the engine-off voltage is 11.75V. The no load engine-running is 13.6V, and the load (lights) voltage is only 12V. With the batery still in the car, the store guy said the battery looked to test out ok, it just could not get itself charged by my system, so either alternator or VR was his guess. He offered to charge the battery out of the car (free) to get me home.
After charging 45 mins, a different guy said the machine told him the battery is bad, cannot hold a charge. said the bad alternator must have killed my nice new battery. said it may not even start the car -- but I put it in and it did. still not fully charged or charging.
I guess the thing to do is go to the store that sold it to me and tell them the battery was defective? But they may say it is my alternator. I wish I could say definitively. Hate to ruin another battery even under warranty, if the alternator is really bad. Any suggestions, I am all ears. Should I pull the cables while running and see if it runs BETTER than with the batteryon? I have heard some cars freak out if you try this.
Other notes: No bearing noise, have had the belt and pulleys done at 65k.
2002 9-5 aero 94000 miles.
