I flushed out the cooling system in our Mercury Mountaineer with Simple Green. Amazing all the stuff it cleaned out. No rust, just a bunch of slime and sand (from who knows where). Anyway it cleans out the oil and grease safely. I bet you could put it back together and just run water and simple green and let it circulate. Then flush and you should be good to go. My oil cooler failed too and the Dealer replaced it (warranty) but some sludge still is residing in the reservoir. I plan to Simple Green flush it next cooling system service.
