Common wisdom here seems to be that the fuel cost savings by using regular or midgrade is more than eliminated by lower fuel economy.

My experience has been a 1.5-2mpg decrease in fuel economy when switching to regular. That's about a 7% decrease to save .15 or .20 per gallon (3-5%) at the pump. Given that, I'll just keep putting premium in the tank and enjoy the added performance as a bonus.

Overall though, the '05 Aero is a great car. With 43K miles on the odo, it's just getting its legs shook out. Some report their Saabs seem get improved performance and fuel economy once they hit 40K miles. I thought so when my '04 got there.

By '05, GM had pretty much solved any nagging reliability problems that were associated with earlier years. Plus, I think the front end on the '05 Aero is pretty killer.

I still have a '99 that I bought with 56K miles. It's served me faithfully for close to 6 years and is still a joy to drive.

Unless your dealer will include it as part of the purchase, skip the 60K service; it isn't worth the money. The $600 or $800 they charge doesn't include a new water pump, and with overhead cams and hydraulic tappets, there is no valve lash to adjust. Likewise, there's no timing belt to change and they don't replace accessory drive pulleys or belts. A lot of what they do is "check/adjust" and most of it isn't adjustable.

You can change the oil, replace the accessory drive pulleys and belt, install a new interior air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, and air cleaner for a lot less than it costs to have a dealer look at most of those things.

Either do the work yourself, or take it to an indy. If you go to an indy, have him do a safty inspection and you'll still be way ahead of the game.
