NOTA BENE!! (Swedish for Note Well!) If you're ever motoring along in your Saab, suddenly hear a knocking noise, see a spray of oil on your windshield a/o a smoke trail behind you --- Get off the road and turn off the ignition immediately!
You've prolly lost your oil cooler hose and serp belt, as described. Continuing to the next exit sans oil could fry your engine.
Exactly the same thing happened to me a couple years ago. What a mess! But fortunately I coasted off the highway and into a Dunkin Donuts before any damage was done to the engine. My baby also got a ride on a flatbed to the dealer who quizzed me about how long it was running between the time the oil line let go and I shut it off. Less than a minute, I said, and there was a huge puddle of oil under the car as it sat waiting for the flatbed, so it wasn't dry when it stopped.
When I asked if the engine could be damaged he didn't look encouraging and helpfully replied, "We won't know until we try to start it."
Fortunately, I'm now at 126K and all is well.
