I'd leave prepared. Breakdowns in reasonably well maintained cars are all preventable.
First, have your tech go over the car and tell you what's up with it. That gives you some baseline knowledge.
Next, bring any "will leave you stranded" items up to date. Like your serp belt and pulleys, hoses.
Make sure your tires are good, flush the coolant and brake fluid, change the oil and maybe the tranny fluid. Are your brakes OK? Exhaust system intact and the hangers are OK?
Get a used DI cassette and know how to change it. Carry some tools and have a AAA premium membership (100 mile towing), which is always a good idea with a car once it's out of warranty and the miles have built up.
Highway miles are good for a car and wear is minimal. If you aren't comfortable, by all means rent something, but if you go with some minor prep and check to ensure the car is solid you should be fine.
