Koni Sport Struts

I have a 2003 95 AERO with about 30m miles. Having used Koni's on 99's and 900's so I've decided to put the Yellow Sport Koni's on the 95.
I think I've read all the posts here on Koni's so I will take the advice to use the upper spring support on the rear units, etc. I am very happy to learn from everyone's experience.
The Koni instructions are in Ikea style. So I do need clarification on where the piece that looks like a short piece of tubing goes. It's about an inch long. Does it go inside the strut bearing?
The initial setting to use is still to be decided. The previous post talk about 1/3 to 1/2 over the weakest setting. Is that in turns or 1/3 to 1/2 over the available adjustment? Which looks like 5 turns based on the instructions. I am looking for a ride more controlled than the standard Aero but not like a track car. I really don't feature the idea of taking them off to do the adjustment. I welcome clarification and suggestions.
The struts are on hand awaiting the responses here as well as some reasonable weather since I do the work on a carport.
Thanks for your help.
