Hi Folks,
A few months ago my 2000 Aero started to get a little stumble on cold startup, a few weeks after that I got a 'fill coolant fluid' alarm on the SID. My worst fears were confirmed when I eventually tracked down a little water leakage out of a small crack in the exhaust manifold.
Over the last week and a bit I finally got around to lifting the head and checking it out. My indy had suggested it might be a porous head leaking into the exhaust port, but happily that appears not to be the case (fingers crossed!) as I found a small crack in the head gasket from the water gellery to the #1 cylinder. The car never got hot or anything, just failed for no apparent reason. It did have original head studs (not retorqued) though.
The job was surprisingly straightforward using decent home workshop facilities, no special tools required at all. The worst part was removing the bracket for the alternator as specified by the WIS - mainly because we couldn't how it all came apart. Now I know how it goes together I could do it much quicker. There seemed no need to disconnect the fuel lines as described by the WIS (which did require a special tool). Only other hassle was the inlet manifold bolts, but not too bad really.
While I was in there I not only fixed the broken exhaust stud and replaced the rest, I did all the pulleys and the belt, did the water pump even though it was working fine (easy to reach at that stage).
I had a loaner car for a week and was soooo glad to be back in my Saab on Sunday! In spite of it's problems (can pretty much guarantee a Mazda or Honda would never blow a head gasket for no reason at 140,000km) I really like driving the car.
Cheers
Steve
