Not to dispute Brian's post (or MI-Roger's for that matter) - but I guess I'm going to do it anyway... :)
My wife's 2000 9-5 Gary Fisher wagon had the alarm system going off at various times (usually inconvenient ones) up till a few months ago. The three interesting things I found are that:
1) Pulling Fuse #14 didn't make the alarm system shut up, it just made it (slightly) quieter. It was still plenty loud. It did kill my A/C for sure.
2) The alarm system definitely still goes off when the car is in Drive. I had to appear that I was stealing the car from my church recently when it was going off as I drove it home. Embarrassing!
3) I never got any "Service Theft Alarm" warning in my SID.
I ended up replacing the batteries myself with the controversial replacement batteries (search the boards, you'll see what I mean), and SO FAR (crossing fingers), we haven't had any more problems. If it happens again, I'll probably have the car re-programmed to use the horn instead of the alarm module, and then I'll rip that sucker out of there.
Just my own observations!
