I guess I've already voted twice...for the thermostat....based on the mileage you have, and you're gonna need one (eventually) so why risk being stranded?
The ultimate way to confirm which of the 2 parts you want us to vote for is to attach TECH2 to your car, and go for a short 5-10 mile drive with your mechanic...using TECH2 as a analytical-monitoring tool. The TECH2 would absolutely confirm which one or both parts to use. SWEDECAR, and other mechanics on this BB would agree to first analyzing it, then fixing it right one time.
Question is, does your indie have a TECH2 to perform this?
You can try this---very old school approach in nature:
In a "normal" driving application....after about 10-15 minutes of EASY DRIVING, pull over to the side of the road or a parking lot, pop the hood, and (using caution of course) touch the upper radiator hose....
If you can almost keep your hand on it(using caution to avoid burns)....the T-stat is probably not woking..ie stuck open....
Good Luck!!
