There is no transmission oil filter to change on the 9-5. There's a 25mm hex head drain plug on the transmission case making 9-5 transmission fluid changes easy. you may want to get a new copper sealing washer. Just be careful not to overtighten -you're screwing into an aluminum case.
If your still using the original oil then I'd agree you should drain, refill, drive, repeat, and maybe repeat once more. There's around 11 litres of transmission oil total, and you'll get around 4 1/5 out when you drain.
You didn't mention what year your car was, but I have a '99 4 speed that I use Mobil 1 ATF in. 2002 and later models have the 5 speed. They require a different transmission fluid. Toyota Type IV will work for these or you can use Amsoil which also complies with that specification.
Personally, I drain and refill with 4 1/2 quarts every 30K miles using synthetic ATF.
