The average tire-rack reviews starts out like this:
"I love my new tires and highly recommend them. They are so much quieter than more old XXXXX model YYY tires which were total crap - really loud, etc."
Most folks seem to forget than just about all tires will get loud with age, and just about every new tire (even crappy ones) will always be fairly quiet when new. The review comparisons are nearly always unfair to the previous tire so I tend to distrust any/all reviews by folks who have only driven a couple thousand miles on their new tires.
I wish TireRack would allow you to sort tires by rank, but unfortunately, it usually just seems to be a maze of tire reviews and way too much information to actually make a decision.
I would just take folks advice on this board, as to what has worked for them in the past, bearing in mind, the conditions and part of the country they live in.
I live in Washington DC, so I don't get much of a winter but it does rain often enough. I've been driving around on 225/45ZR-17 Sumitomo HTR+ since I bought my car at 40K miles in 2003. Each time I need new tires, I did research on Tire Rack, but always went back to stick with the Sumi's. Usually this was because I really only need two tires and wanted to save some cash.
I'm sure if I was to count all the tires I've gone through since '03, I've probably gone through two full sets, in the last 80K miles. I just ordered a third full set of tires last night from Tire Rack. I'll install them tomorrow.
