twice now with an air distribution problem but no code

Hi all,
02 9-5 Aero 90K miles. Today I started the car and the AC decided to send all the air to the defrost vents. I manually pushed the face vent button, gave it time to react and ...nothing, I did hear an electric motor sound, humming, but it wouldn't change distribution. I turned the AC off, pushed Auto/Off to recalibrate, NO CODE displayed, I hear some creaks and clicks (I guess the blend door moving) and everything is right again.
The exact same thing happened two weeks ago, however I had accidently pushed the defrost button in that case and it would not correct until I recalibrated.
What causes the blend to divert to "whatever" all on it's own? Are there sensors that measure humidity which cause it to divert to the defrost mode?
I'm sure I have the dreaded code 08 blend door issue looming and there probably isn't a dang thing I can do about it preemptively....is there?
And why does Saabnet spellcheck think I accidently miss-spelled "accidently", and Aero?
Thanks all,
ghylar
