Same thing happened a few weeks ago to my '99 9-5 V6, but I was at 102,000 miles, and never heard any noises or other indications of impending timing belt/tensioner doom.

I also agonized over the fix vs. replace question. In the end, I went the replace route and bought a Volvo, and passed along the SAAB to a fellow saabnet member to R&R. It was more of a time and suffering avoidance process that led me to not repair the SAAB more than anything. If I had a third car sitting around that I could have driven as I looked for a replacement engine and lined up a repair, I may have taken that route. But going back to being a one car family was not something I wanted (not my wife wanted) to deal with for any extended period of time. And, admittedly, once that window of opportunity opened for me to start test driving other cars, it was an itch that was impossible not to scratch.
