Swedecar - one other thing - I think this vacuum leak was the root cause of my timing chain wear, as I remember going on a 500 mile trip in hot weather last summer when the engine would have a slight but detectable loss of power and the surging idle was occuring - my belief is that a lean condition caused higher operating temps in the engine, as when I completed the trip I recall my oil level being down over a quart - and my engine really only uses less than half a quart between oil changes. So when the timing chain was out of spec this spring - I dropped the pan and the screen was about 20% blocked, no real signs of sludging, and a compression check showed even and I think 170 lbs in all cylinders.
So I think a low oil level resulting from excessive burn caused insufficient lubrication of the chain - as I think the chains are splash lubricated and dependent on oil level.
As I've changed my oil on a regular basis (6K miles)and used Saab semi syn or Mobil syn - I didn't think sludging was involved in the demise of the timing chain.
