Engine vibration in reverse - any ideas please?

Hi Folks,
Car is a recently acquired 2000 9-5 wagon, 2.0 lpt automatic. In drive the car is quite smooth when idling at the lights for example - much smoother than my 2.3 Aero in fact. But when shifted into Reverse (for example leaving a parking space) engine revs seem to drop and lurch into a sort of cyclical rise/fall with an associated howl from the belt and/or tensioner and severe vibration of the engine. Occasionally it will be bad enough to stall the engine! Of course it is much worse if you are on full lock, but even with normal steering movements it's quite severe.
Car has the long belt, and apparently recently replaced belts/pulleys. Very occasionally it gets a bit of the same symptoms in Drive, but nothing like as severe as in reverse.
The local indy Saab gurus (from whom the car was bought) said they spent some time trying to sort it out when preparing the car for sale, swapped back to the the long belt etc but couldn't solve it properly. Only that is was an overload situation from power steer, acc, etc.
Given it's only in reverse it doesn't make sense to me. Any of the SAAB meisters on here have any thoughts please, please, please?
Cheers
Steve
