If your tech pulls the valve cover then they can check the reading on the tensioner. If it is in the maxed out position, then you can either roll in a new timing chain or pull the engine and replace the chain, sprockets, and other parts. If you pull pull the engine, then you should also change the balance shaft chain and replace front and rear seals.
My '01 2.3 engine had the timing and balance shaft chains changed at 96K. The chain noise started when the engine was cold at about 94K and you could also hear some noise when driving at 70+ mph. I was surprised to have to replace the chains since the engine had used Amsoil and Mobil One since 36K with change intervals of 5K. The car had been a leased car so perhaps the 10K oil changes the first 30K had a role in the early failure.
For my car the extended warranty paid for the $2500 repair. After the chains were replaced I was amazed at how much quieter the engine ran plus it also was smoother and more responsive than before. If I didn't have the extended warranty, I'd have opted for the roll-in of the timing chain and then I would be looking to replace the car within the year.
I've got to say, though, that having to replace the timing and balance shaft chains at >100K seems to be evidence of flawed engineering... Both my 9000s had to have the chains replaced before 100K and you'd think that Saab would have changed the design for the 9-5.
