Replacing batteries isn't the problem, replacing them with the correct battery is the problem. The Sayo batteries available are CR17335SE-FT, the required battery is a Sanyo CR17335-FT. They look identical but have a significant difference in their internal construction (go to Sanyo technical literature for details) which results in the SE-FT having a much shorter life in the siren. My replacement set lasted 16 months, and the -FT model is not sold as a consumer part by Sanyo.
Additional problems apparently are preventing some sirens from working properly after having batteries replaced. There is speculation it may be caused by "capacitor plague" (google this for details) and some owners have replaced all capacitors at same time as replacing batteries. Again, there is one oddball capacitor that is hard to obtain.
Some owners have tried a remote battery pack using easy to find and quick to replace standard lithiums. I did this too, didn't work for more than a week in my car. Some have used Alkalines in a remote battery pack and reported success. Maybe the alkalines are a better choice, maybe their sirens disn't have the capacitor plague or other problems, maybe they are a little quick to report success, or maybe they are a little boastfull.
I finally called an end to my nonesense. I paid a Dealership $25 to disable the siren, now hear horn beeps with each lock/unlock rather than siren chirps (just like the 2004 and newer cars), have no more random siren screaming events, and still have a functional theft alarm with audible alert.
The challenge was fun for a while, siren screaming in the middle of the night is not.
