I live in the Connecticut central valley, so my wiper blades are treated to the full range of weather -- hot and muggy in summer, loverly ice storms and whatnot in winter. And, as an urban center, there's plenty of road miasma floating over all highways. After 20 years of Saab ownership and various makes of wiper blades, I go with OEM. They wipe the glass clean in all weather conditions, work equally from the bottom to the tip of the blade, last at least a year and don't shudder or squeal (which also brings shudders and squeals from the front passenger seat). Splitting is the most frequent early failure of bargain, non-Saab blades. I also think drivers can prolong their wiper blade service by keeping the windshield (and the blade) clean. Sure, you sometimes have to clean the windshield with the squirter and blade. But getting out the invisible Glass and cleaning the blade, too, on occasion helps.
