Rim size for snow tires

I recently purchased a 2005 95 Arc wagon. It has 16" rims with its summer tires. I need to buy a second set of rims for snow tires. The owners manual mentions you can use either 15" or 16" rims (different recommended width and aspect ratios for the tires so I'm assuming overall wheel/tire diameter will be the same with either rim).
I'm interested in opinions as to whether there are benefits to going with the larger or smaller rim. Some stuff I already know; e.g. smaller rim means cheaper tires and taller sidewall means less likelihood of bending a rim in a pothole. But all information would be welcomed. Recommendations on snow tires are also welcome.
