Chuck Andrew's article is very illuminating. The big difference from the older 900 is the oil pump. Gear pumps are tricky beasts, and tolerancing is critical. The older pumps were very nicely machined and wonderfully robust. But not cheap to make. The newer ones, so I've been told, aren't quite as well built.
The oil pickup screen is the first line of defense for particles. The oil filter is after the oil pump, and plenty of oil (and gunk) goes into the sump without going through the filter. Big holes mean big particles that can destroy the pump quickly. Not a happy thing.
And as Chuck points out, sludging can also lead to choking off the turbo with less-than-happy results. A larger hole in the pickup tube would work in the other direction.
The best solution to sludge in the oil is to not get sludge in the oil. Allowing sludge to circulate in an engine will damage the engine.
