Clanking/creaking over bumps, particularly in cold weather, is usually caused by worn rubber blocks surrounding the sway bar. More of an annoyance than a problem.

Pulling and rapidly wearing tires could be a bad front strut, but since you mechanic identified other parts I don't want to sound as if I am disagreeing with him.

I have a lot of miles on my car, but these are mostly expressway miles on my 95 mile daily work commute. I try to steer clear of bad bumps and adjust my lane choice/speed to avoid known bad sections of roadway.

The three mechanics who own the local Saab Indy Garage said they have yet to replace a set of 9-5 ball joints! Two of the mechanics drive 9-5's as their personal cars. I think my sway-bar end link life expectancy is unusual, but I am glad too.
