just last month I sold my trusty 94 Aero and picked up a 2001 9-5 Aero 5spd. it needed a little work and I have no records on it as well. but i really stole the car! it was in absolutly mint condition except the fact it had a minor accident and spun around clipping a gaurd rail which ripped the whole front end off the car, it basically caught the end of the bumper on the end of the gaurd rail ripped the bumper support right of the frame rails. it was a easy fix I did myself I was able to reattach the old bumper and had to get new headlights and grill. I have a total of $3200 in the car! with 101k on it. included in that price I did a water pump replacement and belt and tensioners, which seems pretty common on the new 9-5's. if the car is realy clean i would not worry about the car, check the oil and it seems like the main problems with the 9-5 are the water pump, and Sludge, I still need to do the PVC #6, compaired to the old 9000, the climate control seems better!
you will still have the same maintenence to do, axle boots, cv's brakes etc, if you can DIY the 9000 you can do the 9-5 although the 9-5 engine has a few more issues do to the great GM screw up on the PVC junk.
I have seen several 2001's in the 4500-5000 range here in NE ohio with 80-120k on them so I would see if you can get the car for less or no more the 4k
I am very happy with the move from my 9000 to the 01 9-5 Aero
