You're statements imply that fresh conventional ATF provides the same protection as fresh synthetic, but just for not as long a period. I would posit that 20k mi old syn ATF offers superior protection over fresh conventional fluid. (And there's no comparison between 30k mi syn vs 5k mi non-syn.)
That would mean your conventional drain/fill every 5k mi costs more money, consumes more of your time, creates more waste byproducts & STILL doesn't protect as well as using full syn every 30k mi.
Of course, you've got to get to a full syn fill first. (Either Mobil 1 or Amsoil would be the preferred fuids to get there.) After that, it makes little sense (financial or any other measure) to use conventional fluid.
