Dual Stage is different from 2nd Generation Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 06:00:27 In Reply to: Re: Generation 2.correction, TG, Tue, 16 Dec 2008 04:38:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In 2002 the 9-5 got dual stage airbags, at least for the fronts. There are two explosive charges, one with 20% and the other with 80%. From WIS:
The driver airbag is mounted in the steering wheel. The driver airbag is a "smart" airbag that inflates in two stages. The gas generator comprises a light-alloy housing, electric detonator, explosive charge and filter. The gas generator is detonated in two stages: a primary stage (80%) and secondary stage (20%). The delay between the two detonations depends on the information the control module receives from the various sensors. On receiving an activation command, the control module sends a current pulse to the detonator which ignites the explosive charge. On combustion, this explosive charge generates a gas. The filter cools the gas and removes particles from it before it passes into the airbag.
