I'm not a great fan of chains either; however, I live on the west coast and chains are fairly often required (and inspected by the State Patrol) on 2-wheel drive cars to cross the mountain passes. I have 16" snow tires on my '02 Aero and have a difficult time installing chains because of clearance for getting my hands behind the wheel. Since I won't crawl under or really reach under the fenders while the car is jacked up on a snowy highway, I've ended up taking off the wheel to put on the chains. There's no problem with clearance once the chains are installed, but that might not be the case with the 17" wheels & tires.

Snow tires are the first step without these my car was useless in the snow-- low profile summer tires don't work well on snow.
