I have owned a 2000 Sedan since new and currently have over 239,000 miles on the odometer.
Yes!, these cars can last a long time. Yes!, they can be very reliable. Yes!, they can be expensive to maintain if proper service was not performed.
Particular items to look for:
1) Oil change history. 5,000 mile oil change intervals using only synthetic oil is fine. Anything else and you should be wary.
2) Is there proof of the 60,000 mile major service being performed?
3) Evidence of engine sludge. Directly related to absence of proper oil changes in #1 above.
4) Has the Fuel Pump been changed? This is a nine year old car and fuel pumps are expensive. Estimate $200 for D-I-Y and $1000 for Dealer.
5) Has the ABS system been replaced/repaired? There is a $200 repair that works 70% of the time, and a $2500+ replacement that works 100% of the time, or salvage yard scavenging for a usuable unit.
6) The dreaded code 08 in the HVAC system. Again, a $100 D-I-Y repair, or a $1200+ Dealership replacement.
7) Has the PCV system received the latest update? Estimate $150.
8) Have the head bolts been re-torqued or replaced? If not, is there any evidence of head gasket leakage? Estimate $75 for new bolts and new valve cover gasket.
I hope this helps.
