Motorola IHF-1000 Installation Posted by saabsince 93b [Email] (#972) [Profile/Gallery] (more from saabsince 93b) on Wed, 7 Jan 2009 19:47:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I finally got the Motorola IHF-1000 bluetooth installed in our 95 2001 Aero. The system is working well and I want to thank everyone on Saabnet who gave me some help. Especially Herb H. who answered many of my dumb questions.
I know the Motorola bluetooth is old news to the board here, but it is a very worth addition to your Saab and is especially cool if you have analog OnStar installed which is now useless anyway.
And the whole installation was very cost effective. I bought the IHF-1000 on eBay for $100.00 and the cable from theSaabsite for $20.00. Sure it was a used unit, complete with he previous owner's phone book!! But these things don't have any moving parts so they don't wear out. I just saw that buy.com has new ones for $186.00. So they are very reasonably priced.....just don't buy it from Saab unless you like spending $400 for it.
the unit I bought had a very long cable and speaker and Mic. I cut at least 3 feet out of the cable. I used the instructions from Herb and those posted on this site for splicing in the new cable and connector. I soldered the connections [I am old fashion and don't buy the story about crimp connectors being better] and used color coded heat shrink tubing on each splice. I located the main unit under the carpet on the passenger's side of the tunnel. I thought I could get it in below the radio and behind the heater controls, but that did not work. Maybe there was just too much wire!!
I used the Saab microphone. Change the red wire from pin 1 to pin 2 to match the Motorola better. Be careful if you do this. My connector was very brittle and disintegrated a bit. I got it all back together and taped it in place with electrical tape.
At first I was not really happy with the Saab mic performance. But now I feel it is OK. I am thinking of putting the Motorola unit up there and use the existing Saab wiring just to see which sounds better. Some posts say the Saab mic is fine. Others say the Motorola is better. I am interested in input on this. Or even any other suggestions.
thanks again every. this is a terrific piece of technology and it works really well........and is a no brainer on the value for money spent side.
