It's probably not the rear wheel bearing causing the play when rocked at 12 and 6. Its usually a worn control arm bushing. Its usually the lower one. Have someone rock the wheel at 12 and 6 to get the play and then put your hand on the control arm bushing to see if the play is from the bushing. You may have to remove the plastic shield on the lower control arm to get access to the bushing.
As for wheel bearing noises, most noisy front wheel bearings wont have any play in the wheel. They are just noisy. It should be easy for your mechanic to diagnose a noisy wheel bearing. I usually run the car in the air and get the car up to speed (shut off esp or tcs). you can always tell the noisy wheel bearing by feeling the suspension spring. The spring on the bad wheel bearing side will vibrate. The side with the good wheel bearing will be much smoother. If you car does have a bad front wheel bearing it may be a good time to do both. I've had cars were we replaced one side and the other side started making noise less then a year later.
