I had the same question a few weeks ago on this site. I finally gave in and bought the Gislaved Nordfrost II package from the dealership. IMO these are good winter tires. Good grip on ice, good traction in snow, quieter than the stock Michelins. I live in north Idaho where we have had some severe weather so far this year (just like the East coast) and the tires have not failed to impress me. I have a '00 9-5 Aero, so I was limited to sticking with the 16" package due to the size of the front rotors. I have also heard good things about the Nokian tires (Hakkaplaita's I believe) as well as the Michelin Artic Alpins. Most people seem to be wary of the Blizzaks due to high tread wear. I've never owned them so I can't really comment on that issue. I believe that it really depends on the type of weather you are likely to encounter. If you buy the Gislaved's, I don't believe that you will be disappointed. So far, they seem to be a good all around winter tire.
Good luck,
Tom
