Just did this over the weekend along with a preemptive by-pass valve change and coolant flush. I agree it is harder than the serpentine belt/idler repair. My hands are very scratched up and sore still. I found that a socket extension of about 5 inches or so was just right to allow for about a 1/4 or 1/8 turn at a time on each of the FOUR bolts (two 13mm and two 11mm if I recall). This was on an 2003 Aero.
I actually did it twice because I forgot to check the placement of the bleeder thingy on thermostat itself and remembered just as I tightened the last bolt. I think if you did this job once a week or so you could get really fast at it, but we DIY'ers have that steep learning curve every time we do an infrequent repair.
