It is possible to replace the piston & rod from underneath only dropping the oil pan ( cheepo low quality method). However I agree with the others that why replace this if you don't know why the bearing went bad in the first place.
If we assume it is the bearing ( not that I am even totally convinced of it - agree with serp belts needs to be checked), it is probaby low oil pressure that damaged it - along with the rest of the engine. If you replace just that & clean the oil pick-up scoop you might be lucky but probably not. The only non oil pressure I can think of is a bad bearing size put on during a rebuild. However that should have been apparant as soon as the engine was started up after the rebuild.
if your repair is quoted as $2k or more I would probaby look for an engine out of a mildly crashed car with lower miles.
I have a spare 99 9-5 2.3L engine with 145K miles that ran fine if you are in the eastern PA area.
