Have a new to me 2001 (V6) what I have been fixing up the little things that were wrong (light bulbs, seats that need TLC etc). One of the known issues when I bought the car was that the "radio" would cut out while driving. Seller knocked a couple hundred off the price.

Well turns out that it doesn't seem to be the radio that is cutting out, but the amp or speakers. When driving (usually lower speeds and always when it hit 40MPH) the speakers will fade out then come back on - usually starts with the front and then move to the back - though sometimes the speakers all go out at once then back on. Only happens for a moment. I am fairly certain it is not the radio as it happens when playing CDs. the CD doesn't stop, you just don't hear the music that is being played when the cut-out occurs.

Predictably the cut-out happens when at low speeds you accelerate, hit the brake, open a window etc.

Another thing that is "not-occurring" is sound from the speakers when the car is off. You can turn on the radio, play a CD and the SID lights up - but there is no sound from the speakers. If the car has been on, with CD player on and you turn it off, the CD player remains on - but after a few moments the sound will fade out.

Could it be a bad amp? Bad ground?

There don't appear to be any other electrical issues with the car.

The seller seems to think this started happening when they replaced the window motor in the driver side door.

Here's what I have done so far to no avail:
1) load tested the battery at Auto Zone - they seem to think it is OK.
2) Used a multi-meter on the batt. get about 12.5 normally - 13.5 to 14 when the car is running
3) Visual inspection of the amp. Looks good, doesn't look like it has gotten wet - connections are tight. I pressed in the connector just to be sure. The amp is above the passenger foot well on the right side.
4) Took the driver's door apart and visually inspected the cables - all look good. I disco'd the motor cable, door light, trunk release and fuel door release - tested the sound and same thing
5) Took the radio out and made sure all connections were good. Visually inspected the cables and they all look good.

I am leaning towards the amp - any way to test it? Closest dealer is 1.5 hours away and I would rather replace this myself if I can be certain that the amp is the issue.

Thank you in advance!
