Does the car pull slightly to one side? You could have one caliper not moving right, or both could be hung up. Has happened before. Or a pad is not dragging enough to really create much pull but is still getting hot. Does one wheel feel hot after you drive for a few minutes?
You could have the sliding caliper hanging up and just rubbing lightly on the disc. This would cause some burning which would smell. When you did the pads, did you clean the caliper slides and put some brake grease on them?
I put Akebono ceramics and new Brembo rotors on my wife's 9-5 wagon last summer and they are great. No noise, no dust and great stopping power. But they shouldn't be smelly.
