trick to replacing rear shocks

On one of the well written and pic'd DYI write-ups I've seen links to, (from a fellow in Toronto), it says to get the top nut off of the shaft to release from the shock housing, to thoroughly clean the threads on the shaft, run a die over the threads, etc, etc to get the top nut to screw off. Says this is the most tedius step.
If you are not keeping the original shocks, you can simply snap the shaft. Loosen the top nut about three or four turns, then put a deep well socket attached to a breaker bar for leverage and bend the shaft back and fourth after about 3 or 4 repititions the shaft will snap easily.
Recently replaced my rears, futzed for 20 minutes on the first shock trying to get the nut off, then used the destructive method. Entire time spend replacing the second shock was a total of 20 minutes tops.
Hope this helps.
