18+ year owner and driver of multiple SAABs and 9+ year Saabnet user here. (I am not naive about SAAB issues!) I am appealing to the extensive and extraordinarily generous knowledge base that exists on this board.

I have two 2004 9^5 Aeros, have owned them since new, both now in the 50,000 mile range and now out of warranty, one auto, one stick. Both cars have been exceptionally reliable. Both have been properly maintained (probably over-maintained, at dealer prices.)

The auto car has been plagued by a mysterious crank/no start condition for the past year or so. Has been in the shop three times for this, and the service writer at my dealer acknowledges that I made my warranty claim timely.

The first time in the shop (towed in), the crank position sensor was replaced, based on the service writer's guess, at no cost to me. That was not the needed remedy; the problem recurred with two weeks. Subsequent dealer service vists resulted in no problem found. Sometimes the problem can be cleared by fiddling with brake or transmision; if not, a day or so later it mysteriously disappears and the car once again starts normally.

Intermittent nature of the problem makes it difficult for dealer to diagnose.

There is not an identifiable pattern in time of year or weather conditions.

I now live in a non-SAAB city and do not have access to an indy.

My questions are the obvious ones:

(1) Is this a common problem? If so, what is generally known?

(2) Is this a known problem that the manufacturer has addressed with a TSB or the like? If so, can anybody give me a link to it?

(3) Any other ideas?

I have a feeling that GM will be relieved of warranty responsibility in bankruptcy and so I am now more eager than ever to figure this out. Plus, it happened twice in the last week. I am going to have to get rid of this car if its reliability declines further, but I don't want to.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Rafe
