My 2000 has two access doors cut into the trunk liner. I open the flimsy access door and can twist out any of the lamp sockets. Some are easier to reach than others, but I don't remember removing the entire light assembly when I replaced all the lamps a couple years ago.
Maybe these access door cut-outs got removed as a cost savings..........
