Rear O2 sensor on 3" downpipe.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 7 Apr 2009 10:42:26 In Reply to: JT 3" exhaust, AlecR, Tue, 7 Apr 2009 07:58:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I installed a 3-inch GenuineSaab downpipe last month. The rear O2 sensor on Nick's design is located behind the lone catalytic converter, in front of the firewall.
No extension was necessary for the O2 sensor in this new location. I tied a string to the connector, showed my wife the general area of the engine compartment in which to lower the sensor (between throttle body and master cylinder), then I slid under the car and grabbed the rear sensor as she lowered it to me. The string kept the connector from falling into an area where I couldn't easily retrieve it before I snapped it into the bracket next to the Throttle Body.
One caution however. Some folks on the Performance Board had trouble with CEL's and failed emission tests with performance downpipes which had the rear O2 sensor bung too tall. Apparently the sensor did not protrude far enough into the exhaust stream to properly analyze the gasses. The solution was simple, grind it down to match the height of the front sensor, but it took many tries to find the cause.
I would think Nick could provide you with a stainless steel sensor bung, and the correct height above the pipe for when you weld it in place.
