Glad you were able to get it repaired inexpensively, but they probably went in thru the driver's side footwell and not the hood. There is no way to reach the problem from under the hood. Shoot, the blower fan, which is located under the hood, requires almost 3 hours of time to R & R!
Yes, some early owners were hit with a repair bill well in excess of $1,000 if they got a Code 8 after their warranty expired. Even the professional mechanics who post here were apalled by the price, but noted it was at least an 8 hour nasty job to remove the entire HVAC unit as the factory service manual instructed.
