Came from the factory with 5W40 full synthetic. The primary oil specification in the manual in those days was European ACEA A3/B3, which Mobil 1 5W30 and 0W30 fails to meet, and which Mobil 1 0W40 and 15W50 meet. (curiously, Castrol 0W30 does meet acea a3/b3) I don't think anyone has had problems with diesel oil. Given the tendency for these engines to form sludge crystals and given diesel oil's extra dispersion additives (to keep particles in the oil from linking up), there may be some merit to using diesel oil.
Remember, 20 degrees F temperature change has the same effect on oil viscosity (for a single conventional grade oil) as one "step" in the viscosity rating. That is, 40 weight oil at 220F behaves the same as 30 weight oil at 200F. Synthetic oil and oil with viscosity modifiers added, which includes just about every engine oil on the shelf, need a wider temperature change to achieve the same viscosity change, but you get the idea. 4 cyl 9-5s (and most OG9-3s) run a lot higher oil temperature than earlier Saabs, V-6 cars, or 9-3SSs.
Also remember, we're talking degrees of goodness, not absolute good vs. bad. 5W30 synthetic blend changed very frequently is far better than the best full synthetic which is left in the engine too long. The difference in engine protection between say a more ideal 5W40 and a less ideal 5W30 might not be evident until 200,000 or 300,000 miles.
