How much oil??? Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Fri, 1 May 2009 07:33:13 In Reply to: Engine ping, Dave, Thu, 30 Apr 2009 10:54:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
By the time the oil light comes on, the motor needs AT LEAST THREE QUARTS of oil. You said you added one quart. Have you checked the level on the dipstick? Make sure that is up to full or max. If that's the only issue, them perhaps (hopefully) you are hearing the valve tappets, which you normally don't because they are cushioned by oil normally.
If the car burns oil, you will see colored smoke from the tailpipe. Blue if it's burning inside the engine, white if it's burning in the exhaust manifold or turbo.
If the oil level is normal, and it is still making noise, and the oil light still flickers, I agree with the post about dropping the pan. You might be very close to a sludge-related engine failure, and they are very expensive.
