Struts versus shocks....... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Sun, 10 May 2009 15:52:33 In Reply to: tell me about doing rear struts..., shawn, Sun, 10 May 2009 11:58:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saab uses struts on the front, and shocks on the rear. Their EPC refers to the ones on the rear as "shock absorbers". They have nothing to do with the caster and camber of the rear wheels. On the front, Saab calls them a "spring strut", and they do stabilize/establish the caster and camber angles.
Replacement of the rear shock absorbers is very straight forward. No special tools are required; everything takes a metric socket. A standard spring compressor is needed, but this is hardy a special tool. An impact wrench will speed things up.
Jack up the rear so that both wheels are off of the ground. Then, remove the bolt at the bottom and the 4 bolts holding the shock absorber bracket in place. Use the spring compressor and remove the nut at the top. Take the old shock out and install the new. Reinstall in reverse sequence.
I hope that this helps.
