I am a fairly competent DIY-er, but perhaps not a fast one. I spent about 12 hours total. I worked slow and steady. There's a lot of close quarters work that takes a while. No special tools required, if you have a set of metric sockets and combination wrenches. You'll need access to the top and bottom. I left my car on the Rhino ramps throughout the project.
Rebuilding the turbo itself was pretty straightforward, but it took me a couple hours of cleaning and fiddling around to get it ready to go back in. (The burnt, leaking oil was coked up on the backside of the internal heat shield.) One potential disadvantage of a kit is that if your turbo vanes are shot or the exhaust housing is cracked you are at a project standstill until you track down a rebuild anyway. I was fortunate in that mine were good to go.
Once you have the new turbo bolted in, but before you connect the air inlet and incoming oil line, fill the "cartridge" portion with oil and spin the vane a few time to pre-lube the unit so it doesn't get fried at first startup.
I noticed afterward that NEW GT17's are available on Ebay for less than $500. If I was going to do it all over again I'd seriously consider one of those, especially if you're going to keep the car for a while.
