Firm brake pedal before starting

I recently noticed on my 2001 wagon that the brake pedal is very stiff before starting. I don't remember this happening in the past. I always start the car with one foot on the clutch and one on the brake, and I remember in the past the brake had some give before starting, now it's hard as a rock when I step on it. It's got 75k miles or so on it with no recent brake work. Had the fuel pump replaced a couple of months ago. The braking action while driving doesn't seem any different, so I don't know if I have a problem or not, but whenever something changes I tend to notice it.
