My 2007 4-cyl Accord EX-L got 2 mpg better than my 01 LPT 5-spd under the same conditions - about 29 overall average instead of 27 (I drive mostly hwy here in flat Sacramento). I have since added a 2004 Arc which is averaging about 25-26 under similar conditions.
That said, the Accord was a dog on the highway and had a lot of road noise - it was not in the same category of comfort as a Saab despite being their top of the line model - so I sold it. If you compare our cars to the V6 models from Honda and Toyota then we probably do better on mpg.
Overall for comfort, performance and mpg I think smaller motors with turbos such as the Saab are the way to go, so I agree with your thoughts - I think GM should have taken the technology and used it - but I needed to clarify that the 4 cyl competition is very fuel efficient.
