I can't speak to the stick version, but my 2006 and 2008 9-5 Sportcombi Aeros have both been generally quite good. Brake squeal in reverse is common, and everything else about 9-5s apply..
Interior materials are not up to current standards as in other brands, seats are amazing, cargo hold is terrific, rear view mirror is super cool. Post-'06 interior ergonomics are WAY better with simple knobs and a great satellite stereo. Buying used is the way to go. Depreciation is HUGE (I'm trying to sell my -08, since I just don't really need as much- or the payments) so he should get a fantastic deal -way below KBB or walk away. It's just the current market.
I'd say overall, the car is solid and satisfying. What's more important is where the closest dealer is, and how long realistically they'll be in business. I live in the Bay Area of CA -a fairly Saab friendly area. Four Saab dealers have folded near me. I now drive an hour to get the car serviced or have warranty issues. It's a hassle. Love the car though.
